The Battersea Power Station redevelopment is finally complete after an epic, eight-year regeneration project. Over that time, the impressive Grade II listed building has been transformed from crumbling ruin to a sophisticated riverside destination.
As the development progressed, landscaped gardens, bustling restaurants and pretty waterside bars sprung up around the site: making Battersea the go-to area for riverside drinking and dining in London. But until recently, the heart of the project has remained under wraps.
When does Battersea Power Station open?
Social media searches for “Battersea Power Station” almost broke the internet last summer, as rumours of the planned opening date circulated.
The power station finally opened its doors to visitors on October 13th. Since then, eager crowds have been flocking to get their first glimpse of the newly-refurbished interior.
What is Battersea Power Station used for now?
The power station originally generated electricity for London, but it now serves Londoners as an exclusive retail, leisure and residential hub. The developers have created scope for an array of new features and attractions, including Battersea Power Station’s very own shopping centre.
Boasting brands such as Mulberry, Lululemon, Penhaligons, Ralph Lauren and Tag Heuer, the shopping centre is a huge draw for local residents and tourists alike. With the scope and range of retail outlets available here, you could literally shop until you drop. Afterwards, you might want to grab a coffee or eat out at one of Battersea Power Station’s fantastic restaurants.
Other facilities within the power station building include a cinema, event spaces, theatres and a large food hall. The site also offers some of London’s trendiest office spaces. Apple was one of the first high-profile companies to move in, occupying six floors of the former boiler house.
Architects Wilkinson Eyre have taken every care to preserve the power station’s history: their efforts even included rebuilding the station’s iconic chimneys. Sleek residential units offering breathtaking views over London have been added at the top and sides of the building to complement the main structure.

Why is Battersea Power Station famous?
With four huge chimneys that dominate the skyline, the power station has been an instantly recognisable London landmark for almost a century. During that time, it was featured in films, TV programmes, music videos and even video games. One of its earliest appearances on film was in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1936 movie Sabotage. Later, the band Pink Floyd used an image of the power station, with an inflatable pink pig tethered to one of its chimneys, on their 1970s album, Animals.
Is Battersea Power Station worth visiting?
After the power station closed in the 1980s, the landmark brick structure stood empty for many years. But fortunately, the building’s Grade II listing helped to preserve its industrial heritage.
Must-see period details include Art Deco architectural features and a quirky control room with banks of dials and electromagnetic switches.
The site is easily accessible thanks to the recent opening of the Battersea Power Station tube. The station is part of a new underground route connected to the Northern Line (change at Kennington). Whether you want to shop, dine, watch a movie or catch a live theatre performance, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Do you fancy stepping into a glass lift which carries you right to the top of one of the chimneys for a 360º view of London? Or would you prefer to sip a glass of champagne in the luxurious comfort of Searcy’s pop-up Rolls Royce champagne bar?
There are so many unique experiences to appreciate at this incredible riverside development, and the year-round programme of events will keep you coming back for more.
